I am hispanic... latino... of South American descent. My family comes from Ecuador. I have brown skin. It's not something that I've ever really noticed. I can't ever remember feeling any prejudice. I don't know whether it's because when I was in grade school I was a Heavy Metal kid, because I never had a "typical" hispanic accent, or because I as always so tall and, apparently, mean looking. For whatever reason, I never felt apart from the world. Skin color was never an issue. When I married my wife, Pauline, skin color never came up. What did come up was something else that was funny- Pauline's mother was scared that I might steal Pauline away... to Mexico! Because, apparently, all Spanish speaking people are Mexicans. When Samantha was born, she was born pretty white, and then started to get darker and darker. Every once in a while, the thought would creep into my mind- I wonder what people think when they see Pauline (who is a very white woman) and Samantha together. It would be a small creeping, not huge, and it was never really a thought that stuck around. Now we have Olivia. Olivia is very white and blue eyed. And the thought enters my mind even more now- I wonder what people are thinking about us. I feel myself starting to worry how Olivia will feel when she gets older. Luckily, this "worry" is only very small. I guess it's actually a "concern" more than a worry. On the other hand is another concern - that without the brown skin, will Olivia feel a connection to her Hispanic roots? Deep questions, Geoff, deep questions... |
